Tretorn’s micro cellular technology is patented worldwide and recognized by
the International Tennis Federation (ITF) as the pioneer in a new category of
tennis balls called “micro cell.” Tretorn’s micro cell tennis ball, the Micro
X, is neither pressurized nor pressureless. The Micro X ball combines the best
of both worlds, resulting in a tour performance ball that does not lose bounce
or performance over time.
3-piece micro cell construction:
- Exclusive Flex-Felt™ for best feel and maximum durability on all court surfaces
- Powered by 700 million micro cells
- Titanuim and polybutadiene core for soft touch and enhanced spin
Flex-Felt: The felt is designed with special Polyester fibres, which can be woven in the traditional way, imparts a unique flexibility imparts a unique flexibility. This flexibility is critical as it protects the core which is soft and plyable. The felt filling is also developed for the durability which is expected of the Micro X ball. The felt also gives the ball a softer feeling.
Microspheres: The lighter weight core allows a material to be introduced into the ball and still comply with the ITF specification. This Expancel is a copolymer of Aerylonitrile and Methylmethacrylate which forms the sphere. In the polymerization process, Isopentane gas is introduced as droplets. These droplets become encased with the polymer resulting in a particle which has a liquid gas on the inside and a plastic polymer on the outside. Once the Expancel is subjected to heat, the polymer shell softens at the same time as the gas expands, resulting in the particles blowing up into Microspheres with very thin walls. As a result, 1.0 gms of Expancel fills the inside of the ball. Typical expansion levels are 50 times their original size. Temperatures are 140 degrees centigrade in this case. These spheres are individual and fluid in the ball. They are very flexible and strong. The selection of the correct grade of Expancel requires considerable development and is critical to the ball performance. The effect of the Expancel is that it acts as a buffer between the half-shells walls as they collapse during play. This gives a ball with better control and feel on the racket, while giving it better playability.
Core: The materials (mainly synthetic) for the core wall are selected on the bases of their high quality and consistency. These materials are assessed against Tretorn’s specification which is more stringent than the supplier’s specification. Where the core wall, which gives the ball its comfortable feel, is different as it has higher polymer content and lower filler content than any other pressureless ball. This gives a light and softer core, but has all the dynamic play characteristics required for a premium ball. As it has less reinforcing, the flex-felt reduces the stress on the core and so the Micro X has excellent durability.
The Micro X with its combination of the 3 elements gives a ball with significantly better performance than any previous pressureless ball, while reducing the difference between pressureless and pressurised in overall playability.
